A Research Associate position is currently available in the Mass Spectrometry Facility at the University of Massachusetts Medical School in quantitative proteomics. Located in Shrewsbury MA, the Facility provides both services and collaborative efforts within the Medical School, as well as to external academic and industry partners. The Facility supports a diversity of applications in quantitative proteomics, structural biology, metabolomics, small molecule quantitation, and mass spectrometry imaging. There are eight mass spectrometry platforms including two Thermo Orbitraps, two Q-TOFs (Waters, Agilent) and two triple quadrupole instruments (Thermo, Waters). We are looking for a highly motivated individual to contribute to a wide and diverse range of projects utilizing quantitative proteomics approaches to solve important biological problems. The successful candidate will specialize and be responsible for all aspects of method development, sample preparation, chromatography, data acquisition, data analysis and data interpretation using a diverse variety of mass spectrometry and software platforms. Responsibilities also include providing client/collaborator project support, effectively communicating project progress, writing technical summaries, participating in all aspects of publication and grant writing.

 

The successful candidate must be highly motivated, have outstanding organizational skills, and be interested in expanding his/her background while working in a fast-paced interdisciplinary analytical laboratory. A proven track record in publication and outstanding communication skills are essential for this position. Expertise with nanoflow LC-MS/MS is a must and proficiency in bioinformatics approaches including protein quantification, statistical analyses, and pathway analysis is required. Direct experience with data-independent acquisition methods are highly desired. Programming experience is considered an exceptional plus. Recent Ph.D. graduates are ideal for this position with 0 to 3 years of relevant working experience beyond degree desired. Highly effective oral and written communication skills are required along with a demonstrated ability to handle various projects simultaneously through multi-tasking and prioritization. Must be able to work in a team-oriented environment, demonstrate attention to detail and keep accurate laboratory records. MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Perform complex laboratory experiments
  • Conduct in-depth analysis of research experiments
  • Interpret data, form conclusions, and decide on and plan the next experiments to be done with a high degree of independence
  • Write standard operating procedures, schedule work, analyze data, maintain accurate records, and write reports
  • Compile and analyze data. Perform computations using image analysis software, spreadsheets, graphing, and curve fitting software
  • May modify protocols and be responsible for a single, independent research project
  • May assist with budget and/or operational aspects of grant and contract proposals
  • Assist in writing the text of scientific publications and grants.  Review literature
  • Train new laboratory personnel, students, and collaborators
  • Comply with all safety and infection control standards
  • Perform other duties as required

                                                                                                           

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:  

  • Bachelor’s degree in the Biological Sciences, or equivalent experience
  • 3 years of relevant research experience
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office products
  • Strong ability to analyze complex visual data in a quantitative and objective manner
  • Judgment and action skills required to solve commonly encountered problems

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

Under the direction of the Principal Investigator, or designee

 

SUPERVISION EXERCISED: 

May functionally supervise aides, technicians, and associates

 

ENVIRONMENTAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

Wet chemistry laboratory, and may require appropriate contact with biohazards, radionuclides, toxins, animals, and human specimens
