MassBiologics, located in Boston, is the only non-profit, FDA-licensed manufacturer of vaccines in the United States. For over 100 years, MassBiologics has worked to improve public health through applied research, development and production of biologic products.

 

The Associate Director of Product Discovery develops and leads research projects for MassBiologics' product discovery.  Evaluates new projects and makes recommendations to senior management.

  • Manages the development of  methods for producing antigens and antibodies of interest
  • Manages the development and implementation of in vitro assays to detect and measure biologic activities  of all monoclonal antibodies.
  • Manages the design and implementation of strategies for selection of lead candidate antibodies and antibody conjugates.
  • May assist in the management of cell line development.
  • Manages completion of all in vitro and in vivo pre-clinical activity of lead candidate HuMAb antibodies.
  • Assist in the coordination and execution of research collaborations.
  • Compiles manuscripts, posters and oral presentations
  • Ensures that subordinates' documentation of experimental data meet standards suitable to support publication, FDA submission, and patent filing.
  • Analyzes experimental data and works with senior leadership to determine project direction.
  • Identifies and manages necessary resources for the successful achievement of departmental goals and makes recommendations to senior management.
  • Uses technical expertise to advise staff on resolving complex problems as they arise.
  • Hires, manages and trains staff.  Plans and assigns duties to meet departmental and organizational objectives. Provides guidance and direction to staff; establishing expectations, defining roles, supporting career development and managing performance.
  • Ensures adherence to departmental budget
  • Performs additional job related duties as required

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • PhD in Biological Science or related field and demonstrated leadership experience.
  • Prior experience of working successfully in a management role. Demonstrated success in managing staff performance.  Ability to motivate staff to work effectively and hold staff accountable to individual and departmental goals  
  • Computer literate and proficient in MS Word, Excel and other relevant electronic systems. Must also have strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent critical thinking, time management and organizational skills.  Demonstrated ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects and consistently meet deadlines
  • Possesses strong attention to detail, ability to maintain accurate records and excellent proofreading skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present at the highest level of the organization. Ability to communicate effectively with others internally (up, down, and laterally) and externally to the organization
  • Ability to engage, sustain, and influence effective relationships at the management level
  • Experience with cell biology, molecular biology, immunology, cell culture, protein expression and purification and monoclonal antibody development is required
  • Experience with stable cell line development, protein biochemistry and small animal experimentation is preferred
  • May be required to travel to local, national and international conferences and meetings. May be required to prepare, present and publish posters, oral presentations and publications
  • May be required to work extended and, at times, unusual hours, to meet business needs

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

Reports to Senior Director of Product Discovery.

 

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:

Manages a group of four or more Research Associates, Research Scientists and Lab technicians.

 

ENVIRONMENTAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

Job may require working with hazardous and infectious materials.   Employees will receive appropriate training and be required to adhere to UMBL policies and procedures.

 

The Associate Director of the NHP Reagent Resource will participate in all aspects of program strategic planning and administration including:

 

  • Communicate with academic investigators and NIH officials to determine new reagent priorities
  • Establish a development plan, budget and timeline for new reagent project, and execute the plan
  • Supervise the large scale manufacture of antibody- based reagents
  • Allocate resources for operational efficiency

 

The successful candidate will also:

  • Develop an independent research program in comparative immunology or a related field that complements the resource laboratory or MassBiologics
  • Participate actively in MassBiologics human therapeutics programs
  • Contribute to the graduate education and outreach programs of University of Massachusetts Medical School
  • This position will be eligible for an academic appointment (Asst/Assoc/Full Professor) at University of Massachusetts Medical School and a MassBiologics title (Associate/Full/Senior Director of Discovery Research).

 

REQUIREMENTS: Doctoral degree in life sciences, track record of high-quality scientific investigation, >5 years of research experience in NHP models, comparative or basic immunology, or translational research.
