Overview:

 

GENERAL SUMMARY OF POSITION: 

 

The Department of Clinical Informatics consists of clinically trained Masters prepared Nurse Analysts with a specialty in Informatics (information management, technology and computer science) and Business analysts. Department staff supports the UMASS Memorial Healthcare System hospitals. Analysts provide direct support to clinical users (nurses, rehabilitation therapists, dietitians, respiratory therapists, case managers, social workers, etc.) in patient care areas and in the clinical departments. Clinical analysts support the electronic health record implementations, maintenance and entire system life cycle. Business analysts support business functions such as staff scheduling, devices for clinical use, reporting, data analytics and more.

 

The Clinical Informatics department seeks a 2016 summer intern to assist with a project to collect and organize Key Performance Indicators for clinical departments implementing Epic electronic health record. Under the direct supervision of the Chief Nursing Information Officer and the Director of Clinical Informatics, the intern will organize interviews with clinical leaders in nursing and ancillary clinical departments, obtain lists of key performance indicators, obtain current measurements from the departments, and create an electronic tracking mechanism for this data.

Responsibilities:

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Following standard business protocols, set up appointments to interview designated leaders in clinical departments.
  • Interview each leader on the Clinical Content Design Committee, as designated by the CNIO, to obtain the Key Performance Indicators (outcome measurements).
    • Interviews with each discipline will include all entities (Medical Center, Health Alliance, Clinton, Marlborough)
    • Department leaders may need to be interviewed more than once to obtain sufficient information
  • Notify the Director of Clinical Informatics and CNIO of any disciplines that do not currently have KPI’s
  • Key Performance Indicators must be documented and measured in the current documentation state, and documented as the 1 year, pre-go live measurement.
  • Create an electronic documentation system for each discipline’s KPI’s to record the current state measurements.
    • Options are Excel or Access
    • Store in SharePoint for the team
  • Create a document which will be used to follow-up on the KPI’s to be measured at 30 days, 60 days, 90 days and 6 months after Epic go live. 
    • This document will be used by the Clinical Informatics staff beginning in August 2017
  • Prepare a weekly written progress report – deliver to CNIO, Director and Clinical Content Design Committee
  • Prepare monthly in person summative report for the Clinical Content Design Committee
    • Attend the Clinical Content Design Committee and present the report
  • Contribute to department projects under the direct supervision of the CNIO, Director of Clinical Informatics or designee
Qualifications:

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Candidates pursuing bachelor’s degree or recent graduates

  • Related experience preferred

  • Attention to detail with the ability to collect and record information from a wide variety of sources 
  • Must be reliable and able to set consistent work hours
  • Ability to use standard office tools and software (MS-Office)

  • Perform a variety of administrative work involving use of independent judgment, accuracy, speed, and confidentiality
  • Maintain a professional demeanor at all times
  • Ability to work in a team and meet performance deadlines in a dynamic environment

  • Strong interpersonal skills required to interact with all organizational levels; demonstrated ability to work appropriately with confidential information
  • Demonstrates the ability to utilizes independent judgment, assess priorities, and operate in a flexible manner in order to meet the dynamic needs of the department and customers
  • Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint), SharePoint
  • Attention to detail
  • Organizational and problem-solving skills

ENVIRONMENTAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • No unusual working conditions
  • Must be able to perform all essential functions of this position
  • Frequent interaction with department’s management staff and clinical departmental leaders
  • Base of normal office environment with high rate of interruption
